Practice Perspectives: A Clear Vision with Nichole Moos, O.D. 

As a high school junior, Dr. Nichole Moos was given a biology assignment to explore careers in the sciences. Influenced by a recent eye exam, optometry seemed like an interesting and timely option. She was intrigued by the inner workings of the eye and how our brains interpret what we see. This simple assignment would kickstart her journey into the eye care world. 

“While I was learning about visual perception and how the brain processes information, I fell in love with eyes,” she says. “With every new discovery and opportunity in the profession, my passion continues to grow.”  

From Passion to Practice 

Today, Dr. Moos is the owner of Capitol Optometry, an independent practice in Sacramento, California. Although she sees roughly 10 to 15 patients per day, her commitment to excellence in patient care has been a strong motivator as her practice grows. Recognizing the link between overall health and eye wellness opened the door to exploring concerns beyond vision.   

She recounts a newly diagnosed prediabetic patient grappling with anxiety. Outside of the patient’s eye issues, the conversation led to a bigger discussion on the lifestyle adjustments needed for managing diabetes risk. Dr. Moos emphasizes:  

“The eyes can reveal a lot more than we think. It’s not just diabetes, but also high cholesterol and high blood pressure and other systemic conditions. Many folks aren’t sure what these conditions mean for their vision or think they’ll go blind. My team and I take the time to chat with our patients about everything from macular degeneration to simple stuff like nearsightedness or needing reading glasses as we age.”
